Plot summary
Sarah Obeng is pursuing a doctorate in neuro-oncology at Columbia University. She is weeks away from leaving the program and moving to Ohio, where Lyle, her colleague and boyfriend, has been offered a post, and she expects him to divorce his wife. Her mother dies suddenly. Sarah inherits the family house and King of Glory, the small Christian bookstore her mother kept on Pelham Parkway in the Bronx, the neighborhood where Sarah grew up, and she decides to sell it.

- Mensah began writing the screenplay in 2012, after showing her script for "a lavish $100 million biopic" set in 1940s Ghana to a filmmaker friend and being told that she needed to make a smaller film first.
- Mensah did not initially intend to direct, but decided to after failing to find a director who shared her vision; she was also "on the fence" about starring, and called her involvement as writer-director-star "a budgetary necessity".
- The archival footage of Ghanaian gatherings woven through the film was sourced through archivist Rita Mawuena Benissan, whom Mensah connected with on Instagram; Mensah called the footage a link to the old country in a film about the new world.
