- The cat and mouse got their lasting names in a studio contest won by animator John Carr, who suggested Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse after a popular Christmastime cocktail, and he took a first-place prize of $50.
- Joseph Barbera joined MGM's Ising animation unit and learned co-owner Louis B. Mayer wanted new cartoon characters, so with William Hanna he pitched ideas, among them two "equal characters who were always in conflict with each other"; an early thought was a fox and a dog before they settled on a cat and mouse.
- Management advised the film's makers not to produce any more cat-and-mouse shorts, and they moved on to Gallopin' Gals and Officer Pooch, until a Texas businesswoman's letter asking MGM whether more would be produced helped convince the studio to commission a series.
