Plot summary
A grasshopper plays his fiddle, dances and eats leaves while a colony of ants hauls food into storage. He calls one worker away from a cartload and tells him that food grows on every tree, so there is no need to work, and the two dance as he sings that the world owes them a living. The queen arrives in her sedan chair and sees the worker playing instead of working; he hurries back to his load. She warns the grasshopper that he will not be so merry once winter arrives, and he answers that winter is still a long way off.

- The 1934 Disney short introduced the song "The World Owes Me a Living" by Leigh Harline and Larry Morey. The song later became associated with Goofy, a character also voiced by the short's star, Pinto Colvig.
- The 1934 Disney short is believed to be a commentary on the Great Depression and the New Deal, which had just been introduced by the Roosevelt administration.
- According to Leonard Maltin, the short was an early example of a character turning blue with cold, notable because full-spectrum Technicolor was still new at the time.
