Plot summary
Max Hare is the heavy favorite in a foot race between the two. He is cocky, athletic and incredibly fast, and his challenger, Toby Tortoise, takes teasing for his slow, clumsy pace. Max tells Toby that he means to play fair, though he looks set on humiliating his rival. Toby can stretch, an ability that may serve him. When the race begins, Max zooms off, while Toby needs a nudge from the starting line before he moves at all. Max dominates the early going, racing down the road past everything ahead of him, confident that his speed is enough. Toby keeps to his own steady pace behind.
