Plot summary

The Three Little Pigs each build a house of different material. The Big Bad Wolf comes along and blows away the straw and stick homes, but is unable to destroy the house of bricks.

The two pigs building houses of hay and sticks scoff at their brother, building the brick house. But when the wolf comes around and blows their houses down (after trickery like dressing as a foundling sheep fails), they run to their brother's house. And throughout, they sing the classic song, "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?".

Cast

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Three Little Pigs (1933)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Rabbi J.X. Cohen, director of the American Jewish Congress, wrote angrily to Walt Disney shortly after the 1933 release demanding that the Wolf's Jewish-peddler disguise be removed. Roy O. Disney replied for the studio that the caricature was not meant to disparage any group.
  • Frank Churchill's song "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?" was a best-selling single and became an anthem of the Great Depression. It was later used to represent Western complacency over Adolf Hitler's territorial expansion and in Disney animations for the Canadian war effort.
  • The film's well-developed story and characters pushed Walt Disney to create a "story department" separate from the animators, with storyboard artists dedicated to a "story development" phase of the production pipeline.
  • The middling success of the later Three Pigs cartoons pushed Walt Disney toward riskier projects including the multiplane camera and the first feature-length animated film, and left him with the oft-repeated slogan "You can't top pigs with pigs."
  • Theaters ran Three Little Pigs for months after its debut, and it is still considered the most successful animated short ever made. It stayed on top of animation until Walt Disney turned Mickey Mouse into a top merchandise icon by the end of 1934.
  • Reputedly, Walt Disney used Broadway producer Jed Harris as the basis for his characterization of the Big Bad Wolf in Three Little Pigs.
  • The song "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?" inspired the title of the 1963 play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and its 1966 film adaptation, though neither has any other connection to the cartoon.
