Plot summary
Scientists detect a line of infrared light running from the Sun to Venus and identify the alien microbe multiplying inside it, which they call astrophage. The microbe is spreading across the Sun's surface and dimming it at a rate that would bring catastrophic global cooling within thirty years. Eva Stratt, who heads the Petrova Taskforce, recruits Ryland Grace, a middle school teacher and former molecular biologist with a background in speculative astrobiology, to study the organism, and he determines that it soaks up electromagnetic radiation from the Sun and expels it to propel itself. Stratt puts him on Project Hail Mary, an international mission to Tau Ceti, the one star in Earth's neighborhood the astrophage does not occlude, aboard a ship carrying fuel for a one-way trip.

- Before James Ortiz's own voice was kept for the final cut, rejected alternative voices for Rocky were recorded by stunt coordinator Eunice Huthart, Sony Pictures Animation co-president Damien de Froberville, audiobook narrator Ray Porter, and Meryl Streep.
- The alien character Rocky was designed by creature effects veteran Neal Scanlan and physically puppeteered on set in every scene by James Ortiz and his team, working alongside Ryan Gosling throughout filming.
- Cinematographer Greig Fraser and visual effects supervisor Paul Lambert, both veterans of the Dune films, disliked green and blue screens for the color spill they cause, so the production used blackouts and gray screens instead, with no chroma keying used at all.
- An early test screening of Project Hail Mary ran three hours and forty-five minutes; audience feedback from those screenings led editor Joel Negron to trim the film down to its final release length.
- MGM acquired the film rights to Andy Weir's then-unpublished novel Project Hail Mary for $3 million in 2020, with Ryan Gosling attached from the very start to star and produce.
- Composer Daniel Pemberton, who had worked with directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller on both Spider-Verse films, scored Project Hail Mary, the first film the pair directed that wasn't scored by their usual composer, Mark Mothersbaugh.
