Plot summary
Alvin takes a summer job on a two-man public works crew, painting lines down the middle of a newly paved country road through part of Texas that a wildfire burned over. He camps beside the work, stays out there on his days off and lives off the land. His earnings go to Madison, the single mother he is dating, so she can stay home with her child. Alvin hires Madison's brother, Lance, as the second man on the crew. Alvin considers himself responsible and is stern with Lance, who is immature and drives back to the city most weekends. Alone in the burned woods, Alvin comes across a woman searching the rubble of a house.

- Mid-shoot, the crew met Joyce Payne, a resident of the area whose home was destroyed in the fire, and David Gordon Green put her in the film unscripted; he said the material was real, pivotal, and that he could not imagine the movie without it.
- The film's entire production was kept secret at director David Gordon Green's request and only announced after it was finished in June 2012, because he wanted to get back to his independent roots after three films made with a major studio.
