Big break
Shelton wanted to direct but thought her mid-30s was too late to start. After French director Claire Denis spoke in Seattle in 2003 and said she was 40 at her first feature, Shelton saw she still had plenty of time.
First role
In 2004, Shelton started writing and directing We Go Way Back, her first feature film. The movie, which shows a 23-year-old actress, Kate, meeting her 13-year-old self, premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival in 2006.
A first
Shelton directed Laggies, the first movie she made without also writing it. Keira Knightley and Chloƫ Grace Moretz starred, and it premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.
A change of course
Shelton's first work in film was as an editor, and she also made experimental short films. Those shorts were called "accomplished" and were seen as the basis for the "subtle, almost anthropological scrutiny" of her later works.
