Plot summary
An unseen presence wanders through a dark, empty suburban house before anyone lives there. The realtor, Cece, shows the property to Rebekah and Chris Payne, who plan to move in with their teenage children, Tyler and Chloe. Rebekah is thinking about Tyler's place on the new school's swim team; Chloe is grieving the death of her friend Nadia and is fragile. Once the family settles in, Chloe feels a presence in her room and speaks Nadia's name. Chris worries about Chloe while Rebekah keeps her distance and favors Tyler, and a work crew that renovated the house seemed to sense something too. Tyler brings his new friend Ryan home, and the presence closes Chloe's door.

- Steven Soderbergh conceived the film from his own belief that a presence he and his wife called "Mimi" lived in their house, wondering how Mimi felt about them living there. Though his mother was a parapsychologist, Soderbergh remains skeptical that ghosts exist.
- Presence was shot in just 11 days in September 2023 under an interim SAG-AFTRA agreement granted during the 2023 actors' strike.
- Soderbergh did most of the filming himself under his pseudonym Peter Andrews, shooting on a Sony mirrorless camera with a DJI Ronin stabilizer and wearing nylon and rubber slippers so his own footsteps would not be picked up.
- Because Soderbergh was operating the camera himself, the shots where he walked up and down stairs were especially hard: he had to look at his feet, rehearsed aiming by feel alone, and still ruined several long takes partway through.
