Steven Soderbergh
Biography
Steven Soderbergh is an American filmmaker who also works as a cinematographer and editor, and who became a leading figure in modern independent cinema. Born in Atlanta and raised in Charlottesville, Virginia and later Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he started making short films as a teenager and took a job as a freelance film editor. His first feature, the drama Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989), took the top prize at Cannes and turned him, at 26, into the youngest solo filmmaker to take that award. The comedy Schizopolis (1996) followed, a film he wrote, shot, composed and starred in, and he returned to wider attention with Out of Sight (1998). Traffic and Erin Brockovich, both from 2000, were nominated at the 2001 Academy Awards, and he won Best Director for Traffic. Later work includes the Ocean's heist trilogy, Che, Contagion, Magic Mike, Logan Lucky, Unsane, Kimi and Black Bag, plus television such as The Knick.

Behind the award
Soderbergh was the first director since Michael Curtiz in 1938 to be nominated for Best Director twice in the same year, for Erin Brockovich and Traffic, winning for Traffic.
A role that slipped away
Soderbergh declined Warner Bros.' request to direct Insomnia, preferring to see it directed by Christopher Nolan, who went on to make the film.
A role that slipped away
Soderbergh was dismissed from the Moneyball adaptation only days before filming was to begin in June 2009, after disagreements with Sony over revisions to Steven Zaillian's screenplay.
Getting ready for a role
Using the FiLMiC Pro app, Soderbergh captured all of Unsane (2018) in 4K on an iPhone 7 Plus. A DJI stabiliser held the phone as he worked with three iPhones that rotated.
A change of course
Soderbergh's first job involved keeping score and holding cue cards for a game show, after which he found work as a freelance film editor.
First role
In 1985 Soderbergh directed 9012Live, a concert video for the rock band Yes, and it brought him a Grammy Award nomination for Best Music Video, Long Form.
