Plot summary

Jim comes from a small town in Essex to Soho, London, in search of art, music and culture. At the National Gallery he touches a Titian painting and faints. Sleeping on the street, he is robbed. A barmaid remarks on his looks and points him toward a bar, where four men, David, Jesus, Marcello and Victor, judge him suited to their trade. The four are escorts who also work as raconteurs for wealthy older clients. Jim swears an oath, joins them, and begins his training in Soho's cultural arts.
