Plot summary
Quentin Kemmer works as a security guard and spends his free time on comic books, dreaming of life as a superhero and of his next-door neighbor Stephanie Lewis. His partner dies in a robbery at the research laboratory, and Quentin loses his job; in his grief he injects himself with a serum the lab has been developing from spiders. Fever and a day of unconsciousness follow, then a strength he did not have before. He uses it on bullies and criminals, and when a stalker attacks Stephanie he intervenes. Webs begin to come from his abdomen, his body keeps changing, and a hunger he cannot satisfy with food takes hold. A detective, meanwhile, looks into deaths and cobwebbed bodies.
