Plot summary
Sir Walter Elliot's spending has left the family in financial difficulty, and his lawyer proposes letting Kellynch Hall to Admiral Croft. Anne, the baronet's middle daughter, dreads leaving her childhood home. The admiral's wife is the sister of Captain Frederick Wentworth, to whom Anne was engaged eight years before. Her father and Lady Russell had discouraged the match, and she broke it off. Wentworth went to sea, rose in rank and made his fortune. Anne stays with her sister Mary at Uppercross; Wentworth visits Kellynch, and they meet again.

- Screenwriter Simon Burke created a diary for Anne Elliot, using small parts of Jane Austen's narration, to help the audience understand the reserved character's intense feelings of loss. Director Adrian Shergold had Anne occasionally break the fourth wall, and Sally Hawkins over-voiced the diary entries.
- Adrian Shergold agreed to direct Persuasion only after learning that Sally Hawkins was playing Anne Elliot; he said she "inhabits every inch of the characters she plays."
- Andrea Galer kept Anne's outfits plain since the character stays out of Bath society, and chose faded autumn shades for the winter filming. Galer also made a jacket for Hawkins from a 19th-century shawl, mounted and patched with a cross stitch.
- In 2008, the Jane Austen Centre in Bath displayed costumes from Persuasion, including ones worn by Anne, Lady Russell and the Musgrove sisters. Four years later, the center held an online auction selling many costumes from Persuasion and Miss Austen Regrets.
- ITV controller of drama Nick Elliott deliberately avoided ordering adaptations of Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, choosing Persuasion, Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey to focus on Austen's lesser known works.
