Plot summary
Watts Davies, fourteen, wants to race go-karts, but a kart of his own is beyond what he can afford. His father, Vic, a former champion, agrees to help him build one and to teach him how to drive, and the work draws the two of them back together after years of clashing since the death of Watts's mother. Rodney Wells, the local bully, is Watts's rival on and off the track, and Rodney's father buys the kart Watts had set his eyes on. Watts also meets Dahlia, a rebellious girl who paints graffiti. Training with Vic, Watts shows a natural feel for racing as he prepares to enter the regional championships.
