Biography

Danielle Darrieux was a French actress, singer and dancer whose film work extended across eight decades and more than 110 films. Born in Bordeaux and raised in Paris, she studied cello at a conservatory before winning a role in the musical Le Bal (1931) at 14. Mayerling (1936) brought her to prominence. A contract with Universal took her to Hollywood for The Rage of Paris (1938), but she soon returned to Paris. She starred in Max Ophüls' La Ronde (1950) and 5 Fingers (1952), then appeared in The Earrings of Madame de... (1953) and took a supporting role in Alexander the Great (1956). In Jacques Demy's The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967) she sang her own musical parts, and she also worked as a concert singer. She received an Honorary César in 1985 and later voiced the grandmother in the animated feature Persepolis (2007).

Danielle Darrieux was the only principal actor in any of Jacques Demy's film musicals to sing her own musical parts; every other actor had a separate person dub their singing.
First role
At 14, Darrieux landed a role in the musical film Le Bal. Her singing and dancing ability, along with her beauty, brought her many other offers.
A role that slipped away
In 1970, Darrieux took over for Katharine Hepburn in the Broadway musical Coco, which was based on Coco Chanel's life. The play had been a showcase for Hepburn, and it closed soon after she left.
