Plot summary
It is 1959, during the Algerian war of independence. Lieutenant Terrien, an inexperienced and naïve junior officer, volunteers for the front instead of taking a safe staff post in Algiers and is posted to Kabylie as a replacement for Lieutenant Constantin, killed by friendly fire while commanding a counter-insurgency ambush. At the outpost Mazel, Terrien takes over a platoon, and within hours he is ordered to take his men into the forbidden zone and find Slimane, a veteran of the French army who now commands local rebels. His platoon sergeant, Dougnac, is a combat-hardened veteran of Indochina who believes the violence of the insurgents can only be answered with equal brutality, and he holds the new lieutenant in contempt for his determination to remain detached and professional.
