Simon Abkarian
Biography
Simon Abkarian is a French-Armenian actor and playwright who was born in Gonesse, near Paris, and grew up in Lebanon before joining an Armenian theater company in Los Angeles. He returned to France in 1985, trained at the Acting International school in Paris, and spent several years with Ariane Mnouchkine's Théâtre du Soleil, where he appeared in plays by Hélène Cixous and Aeschylus. After leaving in 1993, he built a career in French cinema, starting with roles offered by Cédric Klapisch, among them When the Cat's Away (1996), and he took the lead in Sally Potter's Yes (2004). His stage performance in Beast on the Moon won him the 2001 Molière Award for Best Actor. His films include Ararat (2002), Casino Royale (2006), in which he played the villain Alex Dimitrios, Persepolis (2007), as the voice of Ebi, and Army of Crime (2009).

Early training
Abkarian trained at the Acting International school in Paris, then joined Ariane Mnouchkine's Théâtre du Soleil, where he performed in the House of Atreus cycle by Aeschylus.

Behind the award
Abkarian won the 2001 Molière Award for Best Actor for starring in Richard Kalinoski's Beast on the Moon, directed by Irina Brook, a play about a survivor of the Armenian genocide.
