Plot summary
Jonas is sixteen and lives in a community rebuilt after a calamity known as the Ruin, where strong emotions are held back by daily medication, babies are conceived by genetic engineering, and color has been removed to prevent envy. He lives with his parents and has two close friends, Asher and Fiona. At the graduation ceremony, the Elders assign each teenager a career, and Jonas learns he is to become the next Receiver of Memory. His training falls to the Giver, the one man who carries the community's memories of the world before. The memories bring Jonas joy, pain, death and love, and he stops taking his injections. His father brings home a baby, Gabriel, who shares Jonas's birthmark and, like him, can see color.

- Bridges originally intended that his own father, Lloyd Bridges, would play the title character, The Giver, but Lloyd Bridges died in 1998, before the project could be started.
- Jeff Bridges wanted to film the story as far back as the mid-1990s, and a script was written by 1998. Various barriers held up production, including Warner Bros. buying the rights in 2007, before The Weinstein Company and Walden Media finally bought them.
