Plot summary
Kathy, Ruth and Tommy grow up at Hailsham, a secluded boarding school in England where the guardians keep the students health-conscious and urge them to make artwork. The best pieces are accepted into The Gallery, run by the woman the students call Madame. A new guardian, Miss Lucy, tells her class that they will donate their organs and die young, and the headmistress, Miss Emily, dismisses her. Kathy is drawn to Tommy, who struggles at a school that prizes imagination and creativity, and her friend Ruth claims him for herself, though the three of them see almost nothing of the world beyond the school fences.

- Peter Rice, head of the film's financier Fox Searchlight, was watching An Education at Sundance in January when he texted Romanek four words: 'Hire the genius Mulligan.' Asked later why the message was so abrupt, he explained that he was still in the middle of the film.
- Alex Garland, a long-time friend of Ishiguro, asked the author for the rights to the novel before he had finished reading it, and had already written a script before the novel was published in 2005. He gave it to producers Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich, and development started at that moment.
- Mulligan's role required her to drive, but she did not know how and had no license. She took a two-week intensive course to learn a manual gear change, failed the driving test anyway, and the crew had to shoot the scene on a private road.
- The director had a hard time making Knightley look plain for the film: she was eager and happy to do it because the role called for it, but even at her worst, he said, Keira still looks astonishing.
