Plot summary
Heinrich Lohse works as a purchasing manager at the pipe manufacturer Deutsche Röhren AG, where he is known for his strict and efficient ways. He bulk-orders a forty-year supply of typewriting paper and erasers to secure the volume discount, and his boss forces him into retirement. His family reacts with shock. Renate, his wife, and Dieter, their teenage son, had grown used to the household without him and do not want that arrangement disturbed. Heinrich will not let his career end, so he applies his managerial habits to the Lohse household. That leads to conflict with his wife, his son, and their friends.
