Plot summary
Louise Harrington is the director of admissions at Columbia University's School of the Arts, divorced and unfulfilled. A graduate application reaches her desk from F. Scott Feinstadt, the name of her high school sweetheart, a painter killed in a car crash twenty years before. The student sends no slides of his work, so Louise calls him to set an interview and finds his voice familiar. She visits her mother's place upstate and digs out old memorabilia. When F. Scott walks into her office, his face, mannerisms and painting style recall the boy she lost, and Louise invites him home for a private interview. Peter, the ex-husband who teaches at Columbia, stays in her life, and so does Missy, her friend from high school.
