Plot summary

In 1944, U.S. Marine outposts across the South Pacific stop communicating. No survivors are found and no answers come. The military calls on Reverend Alexander Conte, who knows the occult and drinks heavily. He travels to a jungle island with a picked squad of misfits and outcasts: Richter, a mercenary; Elkins, who loves a flamethrower; Ramirez, a machete-carrying zealot; Dr. Mallory, an occult historian; and Corporal Dax, the lone survivor of a previous unit. They land under gray skies on an island where no birds or insects sound.
