Plot summary
In Chicago, a puzzle box reaches Zoey, a college physics student, Ben, a grocery store stock boy, and Jason, a stockbroker. Each of them solves it, and the solution points to the Minos Escape Room and a $10,000 prize for anyone who gets out. At the Minos office, Amanda, an Iraq War veteran, Mike, a former miner, and Danny, an escape room enthusiast, join them in what looks like a waiting area. Ben steps out for a cigarette, the door handle comes off, and the room is sealed.

- Poland's distributor United International Pictures delayed Escape Room out of respect for the five teenagers who died in the ToNiePokój escape room fire, which happened on the day of the film's U.S. release. The film's Polish distribution was then indefinitely postponed because of the tragedy.
- Director Adam Robitel first planned for Escape Room to end with one of the survivors going home, but he changed the ending so the antagonists would look more menacing ahead of the sequel.
