Plot summary
On a UAC base on the Martian moon Phobos, Dr. Malcolm Betruger uses teleportation devices called Gates to bring a volunteer from the company's lab in Nevada. The subject arrives deformed and insane. When Betruger prepares to travel through the Gate himself, the base goes dark and creatures come through. A squad of UAC Marines is ordered to investigate and restore power. Among them are Lieutenant Joan Dark, disgraced, and Bennett Stone, a scientist and her former boyfriend. They enter by the emergency entrance, where Bennett finds the reserve power nearly gone and 90 minutes left until the fusion reactor goes critical. Attacked by zombie-like UAC staff, they meet three survivors: Betruger, medic Veronica and the chaplain, Glover. Betruger says the UAC has studied the Gates for 30 years to colonize planets; Glover calls them demons. Joan orders an evacuation.

- Director Tony Giglio pitched a new Doom film to Universal in 2015 and was turned down; after the 2016 video game's success he re-pitched using the game's sales numbers, and Universal then asked for a script.
- Director Tony Giglio was not enthusiastic about the first trailer because only 80 of the film's 1,000 visual effects shots were finished when marketing assembled it.
- The film used 1,000 visual effects shots; the Hell sequence was shot with Amy Manson standing before a green screen, and a small rock area was built for the water scenes.
- Universal invited Bethesda to take part in the film, but the game studio declined and wished the production well.
