Plot summary
The documentary follows Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds through the making of Skeleton Tree, their sixteenth studio album, recorded in the aftermath of a personal tragedy that the film leaves largely unspoken. Roughly thirty-five minutes of the band performing at Air Studios in London during the final recording sessions appear in the film, alongside interviews with Cave, the band's Warren Ellis and Cave's wife Susie Bick. Cave also contributes intermittent narration and improvised reflection, recorded on his iPhone after shooting finished and sent to the filmmakers. Shooting began in February 2016 and lasted ten days with a crew of seven. The film mixes black and white with color, and 2D with 3D. Cave commissioned and financed it himself, partly to avoid speaking to the press about the album.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Nick Cave commissioned and financed the film himself in order to avoid conducting interviews about Skeleton Tree and his son's death with the media, and according to director Andrew Dominik he was not expecting to profit from it, hoping at best to break even.
- The portions of the film featuring Nick Cave's narration and voiceovers were recorded on his iPhone after filming was completed; several hours of his personal recordings were sent to Andrew Dominik via Dropbox, who edited them and built sequences around pieces of them.
- Andrew Dominik and Nick Cave had an agreement that Dominik could film at any time and ask Cave any question, provided that if there was anything Cave did not like he could cut it out.
- Several "emotional" scenes were edited out of the film because of director Andrew Dominik's confusion over how to deal with the subject and for fear that they were exploitative in some way.
