Biography

Nick Cave is an Australian singer, musician and writer known as the frontman of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Born in Warracknabeal, he studied art in Melbourne before fronting the post-punk band The Birthday Party in the late 1970s. The group moved to London in 1980 and developed a darker sound that helped inspire gothic rock. In 1983 he formed the Bad Seeds. His signature song, The Mercy Seat (1988), preceded his debut novel, And the Ass Saw the Angel (1989). He appeared in Ghosts... of the Civil Dead (1988), which he co-wrote and scored, and later found mainstream success with ballads such as Where the Wild Roses Grow (1996) and Into My Arms (1997). He wrote The Proposition (2005) and, with Warren Ellis, scored films including The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007), The Road (2009) and Hell or High Water (2016). The ARIA Hall of Fame inducted him in 2007.

Behind the camera
Russell Crowe, a friend of Cave, asked him to write a script for a proposed Gladiator sequel. The studio rejected it.
First role
In Wim Wenders' 1987 movie Wings of Desire, Cave made his first appearance on film, shown performing at a Berlin concert with the Bad Seeds.
Behind the award
In 1996 Cave asked that his MTV Europe Music Award nomination for Best Male Artist be withdrawn because he disliked the competitive nature of such awards.
A change of course
In 2006, Cave started Grinderman as an alternative rock outfit, a way to get away from the weight of the Bad Seeds. The band took its name from a Memphis Slim song, "Grinder Man Blues", which Cave sang in an early rehearsal.
