Plot summary
Vanessa Snyder, an eighth-grader, is close to Stacey Larson, the leader of their group, and to Nikki Rodriguez, who resents the bond between them. Nikki arranges for Vanessa to be drawn to Tony, a boy Stacey likes, and the group pushes Vanessa out, letting in Tiffany, who has long wanted to be part of it. Stacey still acts like a friend while the others harass Vanessa, and the clique, joined by a boy named Ezra, sets up a website where students post insults about her. Emily, outside the group, tells Vanessa not to try to win them back. Stacey's mother Denise treats the bullying as unimportant when Barbara raises it. Barbara then asks the principal, Miss Jessup, to act, and Miss Jessup says she cannot punish verbal abuse.
