Plot summary

Seligman, out for bait before a day of fishing, finds a beaten woman in an alley and carries her into his home. She refuses an ambulance or the police and asks for tea with milk; her coat, she says, must not be washed. She tells him what happened was her own doing, that she is a bad person. A fly on a fishhook gives her a place to begin, and she gives her name as Joe. She describes her childhood and her father's walks and stories of the ash tree, her friend B, the club they formed against love, and a train journey on which they competed for men. Later she takes a secretarial job at a printing house, where her employer is Jerôme.
