Plot summary
Sherry Margrave, who works alongside Nathan Caine at a San Diego credit union, is interested in him. Nathan has congenital insensitivity to pain and little experience with women, so he keeps his distance. At a bar, a man Nathan knew in middle school taunts him with the nickname Novocaine, and Sherry gets even by tricking the man into swallowing a shot of hot sauce. The two spend the night at Nathan's house. In the morning, Simon Greenly and two other men rob the credit union. Simon demands the vault code from Nigel, Nathan's manager, and Nathan hands it over when Simon threatens Sherry. The robbers get away with Sherry as a hostage, and Nathan sets out after them.
