Plot summary
Ulysses Richardson takes the job of interim sheriff in Normal, Minnesota, a prosperous small town whose residents mostly call him about nuisances. He notices odd details, among them an armory at the police station stocked well beyond what the town would need, and sets them aside. Mayor Kibner introduces himself, and Ulysses befriends Moira, a weary bartender. Questions about how the previous sheriff died stay with him, and he meets Alex, the sheriff's child, drunk and distraught, and locks Alex in the station to sober up. Then Lori and Keith, a couple passing through, try to rob the town bank, and Ulysses steps inside to calm the room.
