Plot summary
Joe Scaravella is an MTA mechanic on Staten Island grieving the death of his mother, Maria. He thinks back to the 1970s Brooklyn kitchen where she and his grandmother cooked for family and friends, and he tries to make their dishes again, though his nonna's Sunday gravy never comes out right. His best friend Bruno and Bruno's wife Stella push him to spend his mother's life insurance money on something for himself. At the open-air market he used to visit with his mother and nonna, he meets Olivia, whom he had a crush on in high school, and Antonella, her older neighbor. Seeing a closed restaurant, Joe decides to reopen it as Enoteca Maria for his mother, and to staff the kitchen with grandmothers. He hires Antonella, Roberta, Gia and Teresa, and the Sicilian Roberta clashes with the Bolognese Antonella.
