Plot summary
Carol Turney travels to Phoenix with her husband Walter for his business, and they plan to drive home to Denver afterward. When his obligation stretches longer, Carol arranges to make the trip alone, leaving the children, Nancy and Buddy, with her sister Vera. Vera calls that night to say Buddy is in the hospital. Unable to reach Walter or book a flight, Carol rents a station wagon and sets out. Turned away near midnight by a service station that has closed early, she stops on Interstate 17 to ask a police officer where she can find gas. The driver of the stopped car shoots the officer dead and shines a floodlight in her face. The man pursues her, and she leaves the interstate before her wagon dies on a remote country road.
