Tanith and the sculptor Tumos are forbidden to love each other. Amenophis, a friend of Tumos, becomes Pharaoh and gives his consent for Tumos to marry her. The high priest Benakon objects to this, and he objects again when the Pharaoh names Seper, a priest who worships only the sun god Ammon, as his personal priest. Benakon tells Tanith that he is her father, gives her the name Nefertiti, and says that the new Pharaoh will be her husband. He also plots the death of Tumos.
