Sig Arno
Biography
Sig Arno was a German actor who became known in Germany as a stage comedian before he entered films in 1920. He acted in 90 German films, mainly in comic roles, including Pandora's Box, a G.W. Pabst film with Louise Brooks. He left Germany in 1933, worked in Europe until 1939, and then relocated to Hollywood. Across the following two decades he appeared in more than 50 films, often as waiters or maitre d's. He was best remembered for The Palm Beach Story (1942), playing Toto, a mustachioed man who talked nonsense and pursued Mary Astor's Princess Centimillia. His credits included Pardon My Sarong (1942) and The Mummy's Hand (1940). On Broadway he made three appearances, among them the musical Song of Norway and Jean Anouilh's play Time Remembered, earning him a 1958 Tony nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play. In 1966 he received an honorary German Film Award.
