Plot summary
Six men of an oil company fly a seaplane toward Guam, carrying a crewmate whose sight was lost to an injury and who hopes doctors there can restore it. An electrical storm damages their radio and navigation gear, and they drift off course, putting down on the coast of a distant island. There they meet women in their late twenties who are afraid of men, use small vocabularies and childish names, and pray before a cross made from a three-bladed propeller. The women answer to Lizabeth, a harsh leader who asks an unseen sister before settling any important question, and they live in conflict with a nearby tribe of head-choppers. Some of the women befriend the visitors from the plane.
