Plot summary
Joanna, who hopes to make her name as a writer and poet, leaves Berkeley, California in 1995, and the boyfriend she has there, Karl, to see a friend in New York City. She ends up living in the city and takes a job at one of its oldest literary agencies, which looks after the interests of the reclusive J. D. Salinger. Margaret, the woman in charge, has no use for computers and sets Joanna to typing letters on a typewriter. Told by her friend that she has stayed too long, Joanna takes an apartment with her new boyfriend, Don. Her duties at the agency include answering the fan mail sent to Salinger, which by policy receives a form reply explaining that he does not read it, though she is tempted to write properly to some senders.
