Plot summary
Jean Lucas has served five years in prison for fourteen bank robberies and wants to leave that life behind. His first errand as a free man is opening a bank account, and that is where he walks into a holdup led by François Pignon, an amateur who takes so long that the police arrive outside. Pignon seizes Lucas as a hostage and accidentally shoots him in the leg. Commissioner Duroc, who knows Lucas's record, refuses to treat him as a victim. Pignon had worked as a sales chief at a textile factory that closed three years earlier; his daughter, Jeanne, has not spoken since her mother died, and he robbed the bank for money to raise her.
