Plot summary
Christine Martin's teenage son Tristan has run away from home, and neither she nor her husband Paul has had any luck finding him. Christine telephones two men she knew around the time the boy was conceived and tells each that Tristan is his son. One is François Pignon, a shy former schoolteacher who was contemplating suicide when her call came. The other is Jean Lucas, a tough journalist working on a story about the Mafia. Christine does not tell either man about the other, and the two are very different. Both begin hunting for the boy, each convinced he is the father.
