Plot summary
Sandra Guidry was a police officer in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina struck, and what she witnessed there led her to leave the city and settle with her mother in a far and cold corner of Montana, where she took a teaching post at a university. Her mother has since died, and Sandra is on her own, working out her standing among her colleagues and the people of the town. Then she discovers two hunters on her property. Neither side yields, and the quarrel over who may be where grows. The dispute raises questions of personal freedom, of what the law can offer, and of American justice.
