Plot summary
Ellis, fourteen, lives on a houseboat on a river in Arkansas with his parents, Mary Lee and Senior. Early one morning he slips out to meet his best friend, Neckbone, also fourteen, who lives with his uncle Galen, a man who dives for oysters. The boys go to an island in the Mississippi River where Neckbone has found a boat lodged high in a tree by a flood. Inside are fresh bread and footprints, and the same print waits in their own boat. There they meet Mud, a fugitive who offers them the boat in exchange for food.

- Mud played a significant part in revitalizing Matthew McConaughey's career, marking the onset of his "McConaissance" era, which culminated in an Academy Award for Best Actor for Dallas Buyers Club.
- In May 2011 Chris Pine was first in talks for the lead role, but McConaughey was cast as Mud the following August and was joined by Reese Witherspoon.
