Plot summary
For a year, Scott and Penny live in the woods to make a nature documentary, though after a few weeks tensions rise as the project proves less thought out than they intended. Scott's backpack is stolen, and the trail leads to a nearby cabin surrounded by stick figures and other strange objects. They retrieve the bag, and though Scott wants to explore the basement and sub-basement, Penny persuades him to leave. The place belongs to Mr. Jones, an almost legendary and mysterious artist. Convinced he has found the perfect subject, Scott flies to New York City and learns that Mr. Jones sends his artwork to people across the country without explanation. The recipients he interviews describe disturbing events in their lives, and one tells him to abandon the investigation and run away if he ever sees the man.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Mr. Jones was shot near Santa Clarita, California, at a movie ranch that had several derelict houses and an abandoned mineshaft; Mueller used the mineshaft for scenes that were supposed to take place in caverns.
- While filming, Mueller, drawing on David Lynch and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, wanted the soundtrack designed so it would "make it feel like you're under water, or in somebody's head and they have a bad cold."
