Plot summary
Jon Bennet is careful, tidy and conscientious, and nobody meeting him would take him for a killer. Among those who understand his trade he has a growing reputation, and he works for the Tattooed Man, who feeds, clothes and educates him and asks only for loyalty in return. Then Jon runs into Andy and Cathy, friends from his school days who are now married and raising a child. The comfort of their household shows him how unsatisfying his own world has become, and he finds himself drawn to Cathy as he has never been drawn to anyone. He is torn between her and the Tattooed Man, who will not tolerate a rival.

- Paul Sarossy, better known as a cinematographer, wanted to concentrate on directing, so he told cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos to keep him away from the camera for the whole shoot, however hard he pushed to operate it.
- In Neil Cross's novel and the original screenplay, the tattooed man's lair was a large Victorian-style manor; director Paul Sarossy wanted something more dismal, so writer Peter Waddington rewrote the scenes to take place in the sewers under London's streets.
