Plot summary

David Bowie's own archive supplies the material: five million items, among them films, recordings, photographs, paintings and journals, much of it never released before. The documentary assembles live footage, interview clips and excerpts from other films into a montage rather than a conventional biography, and it is the first film of its kind authorized by Bowie's estate. It opens on a quote from 2002 in which Bowie recalls Nietzsche's proclamation that God is dead and asks how people could fill the space they had made within themselves. The film then follows him through London and his glam rock years, in heavily costumed outfits, as he becomes a rock-and-roll star whose impact reaches Britain and the United States. Its title comes from his 1972 song.
