Tina Turner

Biography

Tina Turner was a singer and songwriter who also acted and wrote books, and she first gained wide notice fronting the R&B duo Ike & Tina Turner. Their revue produced hits such as A Fool in Love, Proud Mary and Nutbush City Limits. After going solo, she scored a comeback with the album Private Dancer (1984), and its single What's Love Got to Do with It earned the 1985 Grammy for Record of the Year and became her sole Billboard Hot 100 number one. Among her record-setting tours were the Break Every Rule World Tour and the Twenty Four Seven Tour. On screen she appeared in Tommy (1975) and later in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), winning an NAACP Image Award for the second. She won 12 Grammys, received Kennedy Center Honors in 2005, entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Ike Turner in 1991 and again on her own in 2021, and retired from performing in 2009.
