Plot summary
Luciano Pavarotti is born in Modena in 1935, the son of a baker who sings tenor as an amateur. As a teenager he joins his father's choir and trains his voice. An audition for his first major role brings a high C delivered with command, the part follows, and so does the nickname King of the High C's. He sings with sopranos such as Joan Sutherland and Mirella Freni and starts recording. When his fellow tenor José Carreras is treated for leukemia, Pavarotti telephones him to wish him a full recovery and a return to the stage as a competitor. A promoter learns that Pavarotti, Carreras and Plácido Domingo are all staying in the same hotel during a Metropolitan Opera season and proposes a concert on the eve of a World Cup final.
