Four young Army soldiers share a barracks in 1965 while they wait to be sent to Vietnam. Roger is middle class and Black, Richie comes from Manhattan's upper class and is conflicted about his sexual orientation, Billy is a conservative farm boy from Wisconsin, and Carlyle is a scared street punk. Two sergeants, Cokes and Rooney, run the barracks where the recruits live. Cokes has already served in combat and drinks heavily, while Rooney is aggressive and eager for the fighting.
