Plot summary
In the village of Amri, a young farmer named Sarman kills a crocodile troubling the village fishermen. He asks his uncle Durjan to let him take the family's goods to Mohenjo Daro to trade, and Durjan finally allows him to go with his friend Hojo, giving him a seal bearing a unicorn like the one Sarman sees in his dreams. In the city, Sarman finds the people burdened by the rule of the Senate Chief Maham and his son Moonja. When Maham proposes a new tax on farmers, Sarman leads the farmers against it. He meets Chaani, the head priest's daughter, and learns she is betrothed to Moonja. Maham, seeing the pair's affection and Sarman's leadership of the revolt, challenges Sarman to face his two champions, Bakar and Zokar.

- Producer Sunita Gowariker asked how they would shoot a city that no longer exists, and Ashutosh Gowariker answered that they would put up the whole city; the sets built to recreate Mohenjo-daro spanned more than 25 acres.
- An on-set accident during an action sequence in January 2016 tore two ligaments and severely sprained lead actor Hrithik Roshan's ankle, keeping him on crutches and doctor-ordered bed rest for two months before filming resumed.
- In August 2016 the Bombay High Court rejected Akashaditya Lama's claim that Ashutosh Gowariker had plagiarised his script and imposed punitive costs of Rs. 150,000 on Lama; Gowariker donated the whole fine, about $2,246, to a charity for Maharashtra's drought-hit farmers.
- For one action sequence, director Ashutosh Gowariker auditioned nearly 300 candidates before casting two barbarian fighters more than 7 feet tall to face his 6-foot-tall hero.
- With only partially intact terracotta figurines, mostly naked, as reference for the ancient city's people, Ashutosh Gowariker said he could not make a movie with so much nudity and had to invent costumes unlike any seen in other films.
- Ashutosh Gowariker wanted a fresh face with innocence and no stardom baggage for the female lead; his wife Sunita spotted Pooja Hegde in a commercial and suggested calling her, and Gowariker cast her after an audition.
- Mohenjo Daro was the last film production of UTV Motion Pictures; Dangal and Jagga Jasoos became producer Kapur's final projects under the Disney·UTV brand before his contract with the company lapsed on 1 January 2017.
