Plot summary
Shahida, six and unable to speak, lives with her mother Razia in a village in Azad Kashmir. After a fall from a cliff leaves her stranded for hours, Razia brings her to Delhi to pray at the shrine of Nizamuddin Auliya. On the journey home, the train stops near the border for repairs. Shahida climbs down to free a trapped sheep, and the train leaves without her. A freight train carries her to Haryana, where Pawan Kumar Chaturvedi, a Brahmin devoted to Hanuman, finds her. Taking her for a lost child, he calls her Munni and keeps her with him. He shares a home with Pandey, his father's friend, whose daughter Rasika is his fiancée. Pandey doubts the girl's background, and Pawan begins looking for her family.

- For the film, the qawwali "Bhar Do Jholi Meri Ya Muhammad", originally written by Purnam Allahabadi and performed by the Sabri Brothers, was revamped with the voice of Adnan Sami Khan; both EMI Pakistan and Amjad Sabri, heir to the Sabri Brothers, called for legal action against the producers.
- Kabir Khan began writing Bajrangi Bhaijaan in 2013 in reaction to the rise of religious sectarianism in India since the 1980s and to the Bajrang Dal, which had a central role in the 2002 Gujarat riots; he wanted to reclaim the name Bajrangi for all communities.
- The film's climax was shot at Sonmarg near the Thajiwas glacier, 10,000 ft above sea level, with around 7,000 people on hand.
- Nawazuddin Siddiqui's character Chand Nawab was inspired by a real person of the same name, Chand Nawab, who was with Karachi-based Indus News in 2008.
- In China the film was released under a title roughly translating as "Little Lolita's Monkey God Uncle", with "little lolita" and "uncle" referring to the characters, and the Chinese version was cut down to 140 minutes.
- Before its Chinese release, Bajrangi Bhaijaan already had a cult following in China, drawing over 70,000 votes on the film site Douban, and it placed fourth on Douban's list of top foreign films of 2015.
- The film's story writer, V. Vijayendra Prasad, took inspiration from a story he heard about a Pakistani couple who came to India for their daughter's heart surgery.
