Plot summary
The Khameran tribe of 1871 lives under the oppression of the people of Kaza, who discriminate against them over caste and status. Shamshera leads his people in hitting back, plundering the kingdom. Kaza's king and wealthy men turn to the British, paying 5,000 gold coins to have the tribe driven from its forest village. The Khamerans fight the British off, and a message then offers them a peaceful life in a fortress outside the city if they stop plundering Kaza and move there. Years on, in 1896, Balli, Shamshera's son, aspires to become a policeman and is set a test by the officer Shudh Singh: beat a child. Balli refuses and takes the child's place.
