Plot summary
Sunita, a medical student, investigates the anterograde amnesia of Sanjay Singhania, chairman of Air Voice, against her professor's wishes; Sanjay is also under criminal investigation. His memory lasts only minutes, so Polaroid photographs, written notes and tattoos inked on his skin keep his mission in front of him. Inspector Arjun Yadav, looking into a killing Sanjay committed at the house of one of Ghajini's men, tracks him to his apartment and reads a diary he finds in a drawer. The diary tells how Sanjay, a prosperous second-generation businessman, planned an advertising billboard for his company above the apartment of Kalpana, a struggling model. Her boss read the approach as a romantic advance and pressed her to accept; Kalpana went along, letting her workplace believe she was his girlfriend.

- Aamir Khan had never acted in a remake before and was hesitant about Ghajini, but Suriya, the star of the original Tamil film, convinced him he was "the only one who could do justice to the character."
- Murugadoss said Aamir Khan insisted on rewriting the entire climax of the Hindi Ghajini, including its location, incidents and dialogues, and felt the Hindi version was far better than the Tamil original because of Khan's changes.
- Director A. R. Murugadoss was arrested shortly before Ghajini was completed after Salem Chandrasekhar, producer of the Tamil original, said the rights to remake that film in Hindi had not been bought.
- Priyanka Chopra was offered the part of Kalpana in Ghajini but was replaced by Asin, who was reprising the role she had played in the original Tamil film.
